# The treadmill of rising expectation
A person may think that they’ll be happy once they have bought a new car. Once they have bought a new car, their happiness level may go back to square 1 once they realised that their friends have better cars. Another kind of person may think that they’ll forever be happy once they’ve travelled to other countries, once they’d achieved that, they soon realised that they are not happy because they have not seen the Wonders of the world. They’re stuck in the treadmill of rising expectation.
In the pursuit of happiness, the treadmill of rising expectation is one of the biggest cause of discontent our life. They normally come from social instruction, which in turn will abuse our genetic programming - getting us to do something that we don’t plan to do. The only way to escape this is to have the ability to control our consciousness and liberate ourselves. (To control consciousness is to be able to focus attention at will)
